South Australia Day 5 – Last day on KI

Day 5 is our last day on Kangaroo Island, so after checking out of KIWR, we set out along the South Coast Road, making our first stop at Seal Bay.  This is a National Park area set up around the location where a colony of sea lions come to shore to sleep after days of fishing in the ocean.  Walking down the boardwalk you get to stand on a viewing platform to look for seals.  They mainly seem to come out of the water and then plonk themselves down on the beach and sleep.  Continue reading

South Australia Day 4 – Western Kangaroo Island

Day 4 saw us exploring most of the western side of Kangaroo Island.  Almost the entire western part of the island (west of the West End Hwy) is National Park.  Our first stop was Cape Borda Lighthouse.  This is on the north west corner of the island, and takes over 30 kms of dirt road driving (from the intersection of the West End Hwy and Playford Hwy) to get to.  It was built in 1858, and reading about some of the history of the lighthouse, it sounds like it was a tough life.  Continue reading

South Australia Day 2 – Kangaroo Island East to West

Day 2 starts with us in American River on Kangaroo Island (a.k.a. KI).  Taking a quick step back, we arrived here the previous night after catching the ferry to Penneshaw and driving about 40 kms to American River.  Seeing that the ferry left the mainland at 6pm, and takes about 45 mins to reach Penneshaw, it was dark by the time we hit KI.  On a side note, due to the amount of wildlife on KI, it is fairly dangerous to drive after sunset, and the hire car companies tell you not to do this, but we didn’t really have a choice, we had to get to a comfy bed for the night… not to mention some food!  Continue reading

South Australia Day 1 – Exploring McLaren Vale and Rapid Bay

We got up early on Saturday morning and headed into the airport to catch our 8:20am flight to Adelaide.  Once there, we picked up our noble steed (a Toyota Yaris – more on that later) and drove south towards Kangaroo Island.  Seeing that our ferry trip to KI wasn’t until 6pm, and it was only 10:30ish, we thought we would explore some of the McLaren Vale region.
